About the title of the album:
When Bobby was a teenager, Highway 61 was stretched from the Mississippi Delta all the way to the Canadian border. Which ran through Minneapolis, where Dylan had attended college for a short time. The highway also passed through Duluth, Dylan’s birthplace. It passed the homes of legends such as Muddy Waters, and Elvis Presley. It was also said that Robert Johnson had sold his soul to the devil at the highway crossroads with highway 49.
In Bob’s autobiography, Chronicles he said “I always felt like I’d started on it, always had been on it and could go anywhere, even down in to the deep Delta country. It was the same road, full of the same contradictions, the same one-horse towns, the same spiritual ancestors…. It was my place in the universe, always felt like it was in my blood.”
